Larry Cox Obituary

Sheriff Larry Gene Cox, 67, went to be the Lord on Friday, January17, 2020. Born May 4, 1952, Larry was a native of Tallulah where he dedicated his entire adult life to serving the public with a kind and generous heart. He was elected sheriff of Madison Parish in 1996 and held that office for 24 years during which he was a member and past president of the Louisiana Sheriff’s Association, serving on many executive committees. Despite the many accolades he received in his career, he was the proudest of the trust the people of Madison Parish placed in him year after year as they recognized his genuine compassion of them and his willingness to lend a helping hand. His office door was always open to those in need, who sought advice, or just wanted a sympathetic listener. So many Madison Parish residents can recall a time when they turned to Larry, knowing he would do what he could to help. He ran a well-trained department much appreciated by the parish and considered his deputies and staff as extended members of his family.

Faced with serious heath challenges, Larry chose not to run for re-election in 2019, but vowed to remain an active part of the community. He was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Tallulah, where he was a great “behind the scenes” supporter. He loved his Men’s Sunday School Class, but most importantly, he showed a genuine faith in Jesus Christ.

Larry is survived by his loving wife of 46 years Carolyn Givens Cox and his cherished children Brian Cox and Erin Cox Busby and husband Ryman and grandson, Ryder to whom he was a doting “PawPaw”. He also is survived by his sister Kathy Cox Grady and numerous nieces and nephews. Always the dedicated family man, Larry eagerly looked forward to regular lunch and family time at Nana’s house.

Larry was preceded in death by his grandparents – Pauline and Ira Everhart, and Arlie and Lucille Cox, his parents Armon B. Cox and Dorothy Everhart Cox, and brothers, Charles Cox and Keith Cox.
