Funeral services for Phillip Lafayette Oxner, Jr. of Benton, Mississippi will be Tuesday, June 25, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Anguilla. Visitation will be Monday, June 24, 2019 from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall at First Baptist Church of Anguilla. Burial will follow at Mound Cemetery in Rolling Fork.
Born May 7, 1935, in Rolling Fork, Mississippi, he was the son of the late Phillip Lafayette Oxner, Sr. and Gladys Middlebrook Oxner. He was a graduate of Rolling Fork High School and Mississippi State University. His career included England Motor Company, Oxner's Garage and Mississippi Boll Weevil Eradication Program. While in Rolling Fork, he was involved in Rotary Club, Lion's Club and Mississippi State Alumni Association. He served in the Mississippi National Guard and was a Scout Master for the Boy Scouts of America. Phil was a longtime resident of Sharkey County until moving to Benton, Mississippi. He was active in Scotland Baptist Church in Benton.
Phil was predeceased by his brother, Lawrence Enoch Oxner, his son, Phillip Lafayette Oxner, III, and two grandchildren, Keeley Sutherland Oxner and Philip Andrew McClendon. He is survived by Sandra Bridges Oxner, his loving wife of 41 years, his sister, Patricia Burchfield of Rolling Fork, his daughter Beth McClendon (Jeff) of Rolling Fork and his grandson, R. J. McClendon of Rolling Fork, sisters-in-law, Wanda King (Joe) and Debra McClain (Rayford) of Anguilla and numerous nieces and nephews.
Active pallbearers are Scotty Carpenter, John Fulton, George Hedrick, R. J. McClendon, John Edward Overby and Dan Rawlison. Honorary pallbearers are Parker Brumfield, Clark Carter, Kevin Corban, Wayne Couch, John Bryce Fulton, Preston Hedrick, Joe King, Peyton King, Rayford McClain, Brit Overby, Kelton Rawlison, Cody Sutterfield, Johnny Warnock, Virgil Wells and Gabe Wilson.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis or Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children in Jackson.
