Doris McMurchy Obituary

Doris N. McMurchy was born on April 4, 1922, in Urania, Louisiana to George and Sally Newcomb; she was preceded in death my her brother, James, and sister, Marcelle. She began working at 16 years of age at the “ten cent” store. Later married Walter Preston McMurchy, Jr on May 14, 1946, in Greenville, MS; he passed on November 8, 2001; they were married 55 happy years. They had two children, a daughter, Nancy, and a son, Preston (died May 1977). Doris better known as Momaw has two granddaughters, Amber Jones (husband Craig) and Aimee Barnett; she and Pop were very present/active in their lives as they grew up. Great grandchildren include Codi Sagraves (marrying Nathan Coleman in October), Preston Sagraves (USAF, active), Abby Claire Goodwin (Carter USMC, active), Lillie Montgomery, and Lainee Montgomery.

Doris/Momaw worked in the First National Bank in Lake Providence and later as a bookkeeper for the the Superintendent of schools in Lake Providence, La and also after moving to Greenwood, Ms in 1961. Her many interests include sewing, gardening, reading, playing cards, cooking/baking, genealogy, square dancing, fishing, traveling, eating out, and working word search puzzles.

Her love for researching ancestors lead her to being active in many genealogical organizations, such as, Daughters of the American Revolution, Magna Charta Dames Society (for which she served as state matron), Colonial Dames, Jamestown Society, Huguenot Society, and United Daughters of the Confederacy.

She was a devout Christian all her life and a member of the First Baptist Church; she was very faithful in reading her bible every night and loved her Sunday school class.

She was very resilient surviving both colon and breast cancers and a heart attack; all after the age of 80. Persistent, head strong were characteristics that served her well as it just may be the reasons she was 100 years old.

Your light will shine on in all your family and friends. Each knowing how happy you must be to be with the Lord, your beloved husband again, and your son. We will love and miss you always!
