Douglas Edwin Brown entered eternal rest peacefully on 3 Jan 2026, surrounded by his wife and girls, at the age of 84 after battling Parkinsons for 11 years with Grace, Faith and Strength that inspired everyone around him.
Douglas was born on 3 Oct. 1941 in Edwards Ms. The son of Dewey H. Brown and Lillian Coffing Brown.
Douglas graduated from Jett High School in Vicksburg MS on 1 June 1962. He joined the United States Navy 12 July 1962. He was assigned to the USS Bexar (APA-237), a Haskell-Class Attack Transport. He was a Signalman 3rd Class Petty Officer (SM3) which was a rank for sailors specializing in visual communications. He was an MP officer and also piloted the amphibious attack transports. Douglas was Honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy, 12 Aug 1966, with the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Vietnam) and the National Defense Service Medal.
Douglas married the love of his life on Dec. 16, 1967, Mary Pugh Brown. They just recently celebrated 59 years of marriage. They began their life together in Vicksburg, where Douglas built a beautiful home where they raised Christy and Rhonda. Doug and Mary’s favorite pastime was fishing and working in their yard together. They attended church regularly and spent time with their friends and family, especially their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Douglas adored them. He would take walks with them in the yard, pull them behind the lawnmower in a trailer, took them fishing, poked sticks in ant beds, watched birds, filled the bird bath together, played the guitar, and read the Bible to them. Those memories will never fade with them. Douglas was also a true animal lover. He never passed up an opportunity to feed and nurture any stray animal. He looked forward to feeding his squirrels, deer, racoons, birds, dogs and cats every day. First and foremost, Douglas loved God and spent his whole life reading and studying the Bible and worshipping Jesus Christ as a Husband, Father, and Papaw. He was an avid Spiritual provider for his family. His faith in God guided him and his family, and his love reflected Christ’s grace.
Serving in the Navy shaped his life, but it never defined him more than his commitment to God. During free time and liberty on the Bexar, him and a small group of shipmates would have Bible study, in any available cubbyhole down in the depths of the hull. The discipline, loyalty, and sense of duty he learned in uniform followed him home, where he lived those Godly values every day as a Husband, Father, and Papaw. His life was defined by the lessons he taught and the love he shared. He found joy in simple things and never missed a chance to make someone laugh. He was our mentor in every way that mattered. He stood in when life required more, giving us guidance, stability, and love without hesitation. Because of him, we never lacked direction or support.
Douglas was a wonderful provider. He was employed by Bunge Corporation for 33 years. He was a Superintendent and was very passionate about his work. He taught us to show up, work hard and honor God in all your works. After he retired from Bunge, he started Pro Touch Painting Company, where his reputation proceeded as one of the best painters in Vicksburg. He always had customers waiting in line for his services, because he took pride in everything he did.
Douglas was a devoted spouse, parent, and friend, whose legacy of love and integrity will live on in all who knew him. While we mourn his passing, we celebrate a life beautifully lived. We rejoice in the promise that we will meet him again.
Douglas was preceded in death by his parents, Dewey and Lillian Brown; and his siblings, Klein Birchett Brown Sr, Dewey H. Brown Jr, and Lillian Brown Farrior.
