Eunice LaVerne Butler, age 81, of Tallulah, Louisiana, died Sunday, November 29, 2020, at Glenwood Regional Medical Center in West Monroe, Louisiana. She was born in Sicily Island, Louisiana, on January 4, 1939, to her parents, John Marable and Clara Kelley McCarty.
She attended school at Sicily Island. She met Don Butler of Somerset, Louisiana, and they married July 19, 1953. She was an active member of Parkview Baptist Church in Tallulah. She drove a school bus for many years for the Madison Parish School Board. She retired in 1994.
LaVerne was a spirited cake baker, making her own wedding cake. She was a perfectionist who wasn’t bound by any rules when it came to her cakes and cookies. She was a phenomenal wedding cake baker and decorator, having made hundreds of wedding cakes over her sixty-year career for brides all over the south. Her favorite pastime was to create, bake, and decorate cakes for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved creating cakes that couldn’t be duplicated because of her “self-proclaimed” icing, only sharing with her son. She was known for her cooking, often cooking dinner every day for her family.
She was the #1 New Orleans Saints football fan. She attended several games and had stories to tell about each of them, especially when she and her sister, Mary Lee, dressed up in a New Orleans Saints Cheerleader uniform. She attended her first game in 1970 when the Saints played in Tulane Stadium. She would often be found rushing home from church on Sundays to watch her favorite team. One of her favorite stories is when she called and talked to the NFL Commissioner to complain about the suspension of the head football coach.
Her other favorite pastimes were her children and grandchildren. Family was of utmost importance to her. You could always find a picture of her grandchildren in each room of her house and in her Bible.
She is preceded in death by her parents, John Marable and Clara Kelley McCarty; her son, John David Butler; sisters, Mary Lee Metcalf and Lucille Brooks; brothers, Marable Dan McCarty and Glen Dale McCarty.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Estell Don Butler; children, Dusty Butler (Olga) of Richmond, Louisiana, Sharon Grissom (Dennis) of Richmond, Louisiana, and Robert Butler (Suzanne) of Hot Springs, Arkansas; daughter-in-law, Bess Graham; seven grandchildren, Elise Jones (Mark), John David Butler, Jr., Sydney Bowen (Jason), Kelley Ewing (Adam), Cole Grissom (Lauren), Anna-Claire Butler, and John Thomas Butler; nine great-grandchildren, Marley Jones, John David Butler, III, Makayla and Jack Hunter Bowen, Jackson and Carter Ewing, Savannah, Thomas, and Joseph Grissom; brothers, Robert Frank McCarty and Alton Gene McCarty of Houston, Texas; and numerous nieces and extended family.
