James Azel Cox, age 91, passed away on June 24, 2026, in Vicksburg, Mississippi. James was born on August 6, 1935, in Fitzpatrick, Alabama.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph Azel Cox and Sue Frazier Cox; brothers, Baby Boy Cox, Earl Curtis Cox, and John Ralph Cox; and his sister-in-law, Elizateth Miller Cox. James is survived by his wife Ivy, nephew Ralph James “Jay” Cox (Susie), nieces, Susan Cox Coco (Philip, deceased) and Sally Cox Evilsizor.
James served as a Deacon in the Presbyterian Church of Yazoo City for many years. He worked for Mississippi Chemical Corporation and CF Industries. He retired after 43 years as the Senior Instrument Engineer at CF Industries. He was a member of the International Society of Automation and Vice President of the Industry and Science Division of the International Society of Instrumentation.
James loved playing football and was a member of the Champion Football team in Louisville, MS and Yazoo City, MS. James attended Hinds Jr. College, where he played football on the National Championship Team.
During his lifetime, he enjoyed traveling on the major highways in the United States and Canada.
A memorial services honoring James Azel Cox will be held at a future date.
