Joe Cockrell Obituary

Joe Franklin Cockrell met his Heavenly Father early Sunday morning, February 21st, 2021.

Joe, or Papaw as he was affectionately known to his adoring grandchildren was born on August 19, 1949 in Indianola, Mississippi to Mr. James Franklin Cockrell and Mrs. Annie Jewel Cockrell (both preceding him in death).

Joe is survived by Ms. Dorothy Warnock Cockrell and their four daughters, Susan McKenna, and husband Jason, of Vicksburg; Jennifer Smith, and husband Daniel, of Byram; Sherri Moulder, and husband Jon, of Sanford, North Carolina; Cynthia Cockrell, of Long Beach, and a son, Bobby Cockrell, and wife Renee, of Madison; His Sisters: Nancy McDonald, Cathy Davis, Julie May, Dianne Hadad, Judy Stewart, and Brenda Kight; His 10 Grandchildren: Joshua White, Jacob White, James T. White, James C. McKenna, Matthew Cockrell, Korbyn Cockrell, Gabriel Cockrell, Wesley Moulder, Samuel Moulder, and Molly Smith (his only granddaughter).

Joe had many careers throughout his long and blessed life and worked hard to support his wife and children. Some might remember him in the late seventies and eighties working for Tom’s and Frito Lay, Budweiser Beer, Borden’s Milk Company, Union National Insurance sales, the butcher at the A&P in Tallulah and in Vicksburg, and as the bread man with Holsum Bread Company. Most recently he enjoyed working at Morgan’s Grocery as a butcher in his “retirement.” Joe loved fishing and watching old westerns, but he cherished his grandchildren above all things. One of their favorite activities was riding around MS in his truck and listening to his stories of growing up in Mississippi many years ago. He will be sorely missed by them and every life he touched during his all-too brief time with us. “For me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” Philippians 1:21

Services will be at 2pm Saturday, February 27th at Glenwood Funeral Home Chapel, Vicksburg, MS. Visitation will be from noon until time of services. Honorary Pallbearers will be his grandchildren.

The Family wishes to thank the staff at Merit Health River Region, Cardiac Care Unit for taking care of Joe in his final days.
