John Robert Shiers died on October 10, 2025, at the age of 80. He was born on September 7, 1945, in Bentonia, Ms. and was the last of 6 children born to Fred Floyd Shiers and Ida Mae Hope Shiers. He attended Redwood High School in Vicksburg, Ms. and worked most of his career at Illinois Central Gulf and Kansas City Southern Railroads.
Affectionately known as “Slick”, John was a kind, soft spoken man, a loving father, grandfather and talented artist. Later in life he took on a new nickname, “Gramps”, after welcoming his grandson, Kingston Aron Shiers, into the world in May of 2016.
John was a veteran who proudly served his country in the Army National Guard of Mississippi from 1965-1971. He was loved by all who knew him, and he often shared funny stories and hand drawn cartoons. He had a love for the games of golf and baseball, and was also a hobbyist songwriter and poet, having one of his pieces published in “The National Library of Poetry”.
John was preceded in death by parents, Fred Floyd Shiers and Ida Mae Hope Shiers, along with brothers James “Bud” Shiers, Rochester “Chester” Shiers, Hilbert “Shorty” Shiers, Carl Edward Shiers, and sister Helen Mae Shiers.
He is survived by his sons, John Palmer Shiers and Aron Floyd Shiers, daughter-in-law Kinga Rybinski Shiers, and grandson Kingston Aron Shiers.
Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. on October 17, 2025, at Glenwood Funeral Home. The service will be officiated by Rev. Jackie Banes. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the hour of the service. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Gardens Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Palmer Shiers, Aron Shiers, Kingston Shiers, Jimbo Shiers, Tommy Bailey, Warren Ellis, Seth Libbey, James Bishop.
