Josephine Coker Peterson passed away on December 25, 2025, at the age of 79.
Josephine was born on June 19, 1946, to Charles Martelle Coker, Sr. and Lena North Coker. She was a graduated from Yazoo High in 1964. She attended Delta State and graduated from Mississippi State University with a degree in Elementary Education. She was a member of The Kappa Delta Sorority. She moved to Vicksburg in 1968 and began teaching at Carr Jr. She was a member of The Church of the Holy Trinity where she was active in Altar Guild and Daughters of the King. She was also involved in the Jr. Auxiliary, the Antique/Club Sampler as well as on the Board of the Vicksburg Art Association and involved in other organizations. She loved to travel and went to almost all 50 states.
She was preceded in death by her parents Lena Coker and Charles Martelle Coker, Sr. and her aunt Josephine Eggleston, also known as Big Phine.
She is survived by her sons Richard Peterson, Jr. (Jodi), John Peterson and Will Peterson (Karie), brothers Charles Martelle Coker, Jr. (Sue Jo), sister Delia Coker Webb (Frank), and grandchildren Skylar Cameron, Ella Hrbacek, Anders Peterson, Aspen Peterson and Nora Peterson.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 30, 2025, officiated by The Rev. Victor McInnis. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until the hour of the service. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery in Yazoo City, MS.
Pallbearers will be Robert Terry, Tac Caruthers, Michael Adcock, Tom Adcock, Anders Peterson, Logan Rush, Brent Greer and Ben Ford. Honorary pallbearers will be Steve Golding, Bobby Barlow, Jim Beidenbach, Garrett Wallace, Drew McDowell, Wilson Carroll, Burkett Martin, Rusty Hawkins, Ken Hicks and Dr. Robert Giffin.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to March of Dimes and The Chapel of the Cross Historic Cemetery Fund in Madison, MS.
