Roger Leatherman Obituary

Roger Lynn, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather was born July 28, 1940. His adoptive parents, Dale and Wilma Leatherman, welcomed him with eager arms a week later.

Dad was baptized by Minister Rueben Koehn when he was seventeen. He often spoke of a thankfulness that he was adopted into a home with Christian parents who guided him to the truth. He was faithful to the end.

Dad married his sweetheart, Kathy Toews, on October 16, 1960, at Ithaca, Michigan. Seven months later they left for Roseburg, Oregon, where Dad worked in a veterans hospital. Those two years of 1-W service held lots of good times with the other service boys and couples.

Dad worked in the Wolverine shoe factory and a trailer factory in Ithaca, Michigan. As a result of wanting to work with his children, they bought a dairy farm in Versailles, Missouri, making that their home. The children remember many happy times on that dairy farm. Although they worked hard, a drought brought an end to the farm. Then they moved to Transylvania, Louisiana, where he was a carpenter with his brother-in-law, John Toews. And later a land leveler with his sons. They lived in Transylvania forty-four years.

When Dad had something to say, it was worth listening to. He had a special love for his children and grandchildren, often praying for them. When the children and grandchildren married, he accepted them as his own.

As Dad and Mom’s heath failed, they moved to Oakwood Retirement Center at Brooksville, Mississippi. His death was a result of a stroke.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Kathy. He remained truly devoted to her sixty-two years. His children, Cindy and Anthony Unruh, Okolona, Mississippi; Merlin and Melgra Leatherman, Mize, Mississippi; Rodney and Bonnie Leatherman, Transylvania, Louisiana; Patrick and Lori Leatherman, Transylvania, Louisiana; eighteen grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren. Louise Litwiller and Kimberly Morgan were two foster girls who became like sisters, and one sister-in-law, Elaine Leatherman.

Preceding him death were his parents and brother.
