Thomas N. Herrod, aged 85, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 16, at his home, surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his parents—Tommie Sanders and Bennie N. Herrod, son—Thomas Noel Herrod II, wife—Frances Herrod, sister—Peggy Carothers, brother—William Vascoe, 2 sons-in-law—David Ivey and Charley Ashley.
Tommy is survived by his 3 daughters—Tecia Ivey, Julie Ashley, Jodie Williams (Chris), and his brother—Ronnie Sanders, all of Vicksburg. 5 grandchildren—Cara Hillyard (Trey), Natalee Chandler (Jamie), Allison Kurtz, Hunter Williams, Mazee Ashley. 6 great grandchildren—Manny Chandler (Alana), Johnathan Chandler, Embyrlee Hillyard, Stella Chandler, Ahna Hillyard, and Jack Hillyard in addition to many nieces and nephews.
He was a member of several entities throughout his life: Moose Lodge, Elks Lodge, Honorary Member of Knights of Columbus, Leighenares Club, WEMF Club, and Red Carpet Riding Club.
At the age of 8 or 9, Tommy became a paperboy. He often told the story of the papers being so big he would only get ½ of them at a time and take them home to his grandmother whom he lived with, and she would roll them for him while he delivered the other half. At 20 years old, he joined the Navy as a boatswain mate stationed on a 360ft cargo ship (DER-318) out of New Port, RI. He served two years active duty and 4 years reserve. After leaving the Navy, he worked a few electrical jobs and then joined the Corps of Engineers where he started as an electrical helper and quickly moved through the ranks (crane operator, foreman, chief assistant) where he retired at the age of 55.
Tommy's favorite past times include: golf, camping, hosting annual pig roasts, riding his golf cart, going to Levi’s, going to church, drinking his 3 o’clock coffee with his daughter, Julie, and hanging at the shop with his daughter, Jodie.
Visitation will be held on Friday, July 19, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM and on Saturday, July 20, 2024, from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM, with services to follow on Saturday at Glenwood Funeral Home.
Pallbearers: Butch Phillips, RH Pierce, John Alexander, Paul Rachael, John Ervin, Gary Burchfield, Jamie Chandler, and Trey Hillyard. Honorary paul bearers: Dan Askew, Wesley Boykin, Dennis Norris, and Ray Kelly.
