Thomas “Tommy” Cleveland Shelton II, 72, of Vicksburg, Mississippi, passed away on October 4, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, faith, and unwavering love for his family and community. Born on February 28, 1953, to Helen and Thomas Shelton in Vicksburg, Tommy’s life was a testament to the quiet power of presence and steadfast devotion.
Tommy grew up in Vicksburg, graduating from Cooper High School before earning a degree in Civil Engineering from Mississippi State University and later an MBA from Millsaps College. His sharp mind and kind heart guided his professional journey, but his true calling was found in the simple joys of life, being surrounded by his family, cheering on Mississippi State sports, and serving his community with a servant’s heart.
Tommy’s distinguished 35-year career at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers included roles in both the Vicksburg District and Mississippi Valley Division, where he worked in construction and project management. Driven by his passion for meaningful work and helping others, he continued his career in the private sector with Waggoner Engineering, where he brought decades of expertise to new projects and challenges. Later in life, he also enjoyed working in real estate in Vicksburg, always eager to stay connected to his community and offer his knowledge and support wherever he could.
Dedicated to improving his community, Tommy was deeply involved in local education. He actively participated in the PTA throughout his daughters’ school years and served on the Vicksburg/Warren School Board for six years, always advocating for the betterment of future generations.
A devoted Christian, Tommy lived his faith through action and leadership. He held numerous roles at Crawford Street United Methodist Church over the years, including Lay Leader, head and member of the Administrative Board, and Trustee. He sang in the choir for many years and was a constant, reliable presence in the church community. Whether organizing, serving, or supporting others behind the scenes, Tommy’s commitment to his faith was evident in every part of his life. He also volunteered through organizations like the Community Food Pantry, Service Over Self, and Mercy Chefs, always choosing to lead with love and humility.
Tommy had a lifelong love of music. He played the piano, guitar, and saxophone in his younger years, and music remained a constant thread throughout his life. His girls remember the joy of hearing him play and sing, memories woven into the soundtrack of their childhood.
Above all else, Tommy’s greatest joy was his family- his “girls.” He was a loving husband to Donna and a proud, loving father to his three daughters: Lindsay, Lori Beth, and Caitlin. His love
was shown in countless thoughtful ways, filling up their gas tanks before they even asked, never missing a birthday or special occasion, and sending cards and flowers every year, without fail. His family was his world, and he made sure they felt it every single day.
Tommy showed up for his family in ways big and small, whether hanging out with his family or recommending a book to a friend to spark a thoughtful conversation. His humor, wisdom, and steady presence were a gift to all who knew him.
He found joy in the everyday, hosting family gatherings, watching Mississippi State games (often too nervous to watch to the end), or sharing a quiet, meaningful moment of connection. His life reminds us that love doesn’t need extravagance, just presence, care, and a heart open to others.
Tommy was preceded in death by his parents, Helen and Thomas Shelton.
Tommy is survived by his wife, Donna; daughters, Lindsay, Lori Beth (Chris), and Caitlin (Jay); granddaughters Ruth & Norah; brother, John (Sherrie); niece, Kali (Ben); and grandnephew and grandnieces Collins, Gray, and Sara Beth, along with countless cousins and friends who were touched by his kindness.
A memorial service will be held at Crawford Street United Methodist Church. Visitation will be Saturday from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m., with the service to follow shortly thereafter.
